Learner Resources

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) sets the professional standards for nursing and midwifery in the UK. This includes the education and training standards that apply to the student programme of study and specifically Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA). These Standards set the requirements for student practice learning. They define the roles of the student, Practice Supervisor (PS), Practice Assessor (PA) and Academic Assessor (AA) in the learning process.

This page contains the e-learning resources you will need if you are preparing to become a practice supervisor or practice assessor. You should complete the prerequisite learning modules before progressing to practice supervisor or practice assessor preparation.

The Revise and Refresh videos provide a quick in-depth look at the key stages and skills required. You may wish to refresh your knowledge and skills if you have had a long gap between students or are doing a process for the first time (e.g. managing an action plan). These videos will help you with that.

Prerequisite Learning

The e-learning modules in this section provide a foundation in understanding:

  • how healthcare works in the UK
  • the importance of cultural and learning differences
  • the basis for the student practice learning requirements set by the NMC

To ensure you have the background knowledge necessary to undertake the practice supervisor or practice assessor preparation, we highly recommend that you complete these modules. This will help to ensure that our students have the best learning experience and are supported to complete their programmes successfully. The modules have been developed based on feedback from and in collaboration with our internationally-educated practice colleagues and students.

BETA Version: These modules are available to use immediately. We invite your comments on the experience of using the modules and the learning and resources they provide. We will be monitoring feedback over the next few months. Please send your feedback to:
